BEIJING, Nov. 29 (People's Daily Online) -- A spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry on Thursday defended the country's investment in a protest-troubled copper mine project in Myanmar and called on all parties in Myanmar to create a favorable environment for the project's progress.

"Myanmar's Monywa-Latpadantaung copper mine is a mutually beneficial cooperative project between China and Myanmar," Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing in response to a question regarding recent protests at the site.

Despite the protesters' concerns, the land requisition and demolition, distribution of returns and environmental protection concerning the project were jointly discussed and decided by the two sides and comply with Myanmar's laws and regulations, Hong said.

The Monywa copper mine project in Myanmar's northwestern Sagaing region has been jointly undertaken by Myanmar Economic Holding Ltd along with China's Wanbao Mining Ltd and Yangtze Copper Ltd, and legally registered in Myanmar after Canadian firm Ivanhoe pulled out two years ago.
