BEIJING, Jan. 28 (People's Daily Online) -- A Foreign Ministry spokesman on Monday called for stability in Egypt after deadly confrontations occurred between protesters and security forces in three governorates.

"China expects the affected parts of Egypt to restore stability as soon as possible and avoid casualties," spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing on Monday.

Hong's comments came after Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi on Sunday imposed a curfew and a state of emergency in the turmoil-stricken Port Said governorate, as well as the governorates of Suez and Ismailia, due to ongoing violence.

Over the past few days, the three governorates have witnessed violent confrontations between protesters and security forces.

The Egyptian president attributed the violance to "sinful hands" that have deviated from peaceful protest and expression of opinion to armed aggression and vandalism.

Morsi invited the leaders of the country's political forces for a dialogue on Monday afternoon.

"China supports efforts by related Egyptian parties to resolve their differences through political dialogue," Hong said.
