China rejects U.S. accusation on Snowden

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The United States' accusation against China on fugitive U.S. intelligence leaker Edward Snowden's departure from Hong Kong is groundless and China will not accept it, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

"The accusation that the U.S. side made against the Central Government of China fell short of proof. The Chinese side will absolutely not accept it," spokeswomen Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing.

"The U.S. side's doubt about the lawful operation by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is totally unreasonable," she said.

Snowden, the target of a U.S. arrest warrant, left Hong Kong on Sunday aboard a flight and landed in Moscow.

The White House earlier called it "a deliberate choice by the (Chinese) government to release a fugitive despite a valid arrest warrant," and that decision "unquestionably" has a negative impact on the U.S.-China relationship.

Hua said China's stance has been clear and consistent that healthy and stable China-U.S. relations are in the interests of the two countries and their people and also conducive to peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world.

"We hope the U.S. side will work with China to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, manage and control disputes and conflicts and advance bilateral relations constantly," she said.

Commenting cyber security issues, Hua said China opposes any form of cyber attacks and the use of double standard.

Cyberspace needs cooperation and international rules, Hua said. She expressed the hope that relevant parties observe the spirit of mutual respect and trust, actively carry out dialogue and cooperation, properly resolve the issue of online security and jointly safeguard peace, security, openness and cooperation in cyberspace.

Hua said online security is an important topic in the China-U.S. dialogue, on which the two sides have actually maintain communication.

She said the U.S. side is fully aware of the principle stance of the Chinese side.

China and the United States have recently decided to set up a network panel within the framework of bilateral strategic and security dialogue.

"I believe the two sides will continue to have extensive communication and dialogue within the framework," Hua said.

The United States has claimed that China"s refusal to extradite Edward Snowden has damaged U.S. Chinese relations. That is incorrect. Within weeks of the Obama Administration"s accusation that China has been conducting hacking attacks against U.S. institutions, Snowden revealed to the World that the U.S. has been conducting hacking attacks for years against China"s governmental institutions, and even the personal communications of the Chinese people. It is important for the World that the United States and China develop cooperation wherever, and whenever they can. This cooperation can only develop in an atmosphere of trust. In allowing the Snowden affair to damage the U.S. China relationship the Obama Administration is just having a sour grape attitude. Hopefully wiser elements in the Administration will realize, as the Chinese certainly have, the wisdom of improving the U.S. China relationship in the long term.

China should hurry up to protect cyber espionage now that it is proven that US has been doing that for the longest time and yet US is shameless in finger pointing China.

You have helped a criminal escape justice. how can anyone in the west do business with you if you hold such a casual attitude to your obligations under international law?

Snowden is a patriot and a hero for bringing to light what we have suspected but refused to acknowledge, that the US government has been using the pretext of global terrorism to spy on its own citizens under the cloak of national security. When the government shreds the constitution and treats its own citizens as the enemy it becomes the enemy and deserves no loyalty or allegiance.
