ABIDJAN, Aug. 20 -- Cote d'Ivoire's Health Minister Raymonde Goudou-Coffie has cited the Chinese example of mixing the traditional and modern medicine as one model that should be emulated by Africa, and particularly by Cote d'Ivoire.

"The successful Chinese model of using both the traditional and modern medicine in health facilities is one that should be emulated," the minister said on Monday after arriving from a three- day tour of China.

The minister was in China under the auspices of Sino-African forum for health ministers, which was meant to promote cooperation in the health sector and identify priorities between the two parties.

During her stay in China, the health minister visited the Sino- Japan Friendship hospital (ASJ) in Beijing, a building which is fully "digitized." ASJ is expected to establish partnership with the Yopougon University Hospital Center (CHU) in Abidjan, in treatment of patients.

In her position as the chairperson of the assembly of health ministers within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Goudou Coffie reiterated the commitment of both the African and Chinese parties in promoting cooperation in health matters.

"The cooperation has led to the establishment of a number of malaria research centers in Africa and the construction of various hospitals," she said, while highlighting a number of challenges that African countries have been confronted with in the health sector.

She noted that African countries are exposed to burdens of all kinds of diseases, they have weak national health systems and they continue to experience shortage of drugs as well as vaccines in hospitals.

Madam Goudou Coffie said the "inability" of African countries to overcome these challenges justified the need to cooperate with the international community for joint actions.
