Next year is the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil. On Oct 29, 2013 Valdemar Leao, who was appointed Brazilian Ambassador to China early this year, gave an exclusive interview to People's Daily Online's Qiangguo Forum, a well-known Chinese BBS.

In the interview, the ambassador shared his views on a wide variety of topics ranging through the Sino-Brazil relationship, future trade cooperation in manufacturing industry and agriculture, cultural exchanges, and China's participation in Rio's infrastructure programs for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

The Richness and Diversity of the Sino-Brazil Relationship

A wide range of actors play their parts in the Sino-Brazil relationship, therefore it is important for the two countries to understand their relationship's richness and diversity, said Brazil's top diplomat in Beijing as he gave an exclusive interview at People's Daily Online.

He said the relationship between China and Brazil now extends well beyond politics: "This is a relationship that engages companies, academia, and the media. A wide range of actors take part in this relationship - its richness and diversity make it very exciting".

He also drew attention to the fact that the two countries will hold celebrations for next year's 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and that Brazil is planning to host a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

More Industrial Goods and Processed Agricultural Products in Future Trade

Talking about bilateral economic cooperation, the ambassador said: "There is still huge potential to be tapped in trade between the two countries, since China is now the largest trading partner and export market for Brazil, overtaking the U.S."

Since 2003, Brazil has been second only to the U.S. in terms of agricultural exports and production of agricultural exports. The ambassador sees great potential for expansion in Brazil's agriculture industry.

He pointed out that the volume of trade cooperation is already at a very high level. To boost future trade, governments of the two countries should stimulate companies to improve and increase their focus on manufactured goods and processed food products.

He also urged stronger financial cooperation and steady progress in settling bilateral accounts in local currencies.

The Influence of Establishing a BRICS Development Bank

Both China and Brazil are members of BRICS. At this year's BRICS meeting, all sides discussed the establishment of a BRICS development bank and arrangements for a contingency reserve.

The ambassador pointed out that to a certain extent currency reserves among the BRICS countries reserves are currently lying idle. "They are used to buy treasury bonds or other typically conservative investments, because countries have to take care of the value of their reserves."
