BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday congratulated Abdulla Yameen on winning the Maldivian presidential election on Saturday.

"We are glad to see that the Maldivian presidential election was held smoothly on Nov. 16. China congratulates Mr. Yameen on winning the election and his swearing in as new president," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a daily press briefing.

The Maldives is a favorite destination of Chinese tourists, said Qin. With the rapid increase of Chinese tourists to the island country in the Indian Ocean, China has become the Maldives' largest source of tourists for three consecutive years, he said.

China attaches great importance to China-Maldives relations, and would like to work with the new government of the Maldives to further promote the development of bilateral ties, Qin said.

Yameen was sworn in as the sixth president of the Republic of the Maldives on Sunday, one day after he defeated former president Mohamed Nasheed in the presidential runoff election.
