BEIJING, Nov. 25 -- China hopes the Palestinians and Israel will maintain the momentum of dialogue and make substantial progress at an early date, President Xi Jinping said Monday.

"China welcomes the resumption of the peaceful talks between the Palestinians and Israel," Xi said in a message hailing the meeting held at the United Nations to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

The Palestinian issue, which concerns the long-term stability, prosperity and development of the Palestinians and other countries in the Middle East, should be solved through negotiations, he said.

China's support for the just cause of the Palestinian people is sincere and selfless, Xi said.

"China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a responsible major country, is willing to work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to realize long-lasting peace in the Middle East," he said.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed by the United Nations on or around November 29 each year. On that day in 1947, the General Assembly adopted a resolution which provided for the establishment in Palestine of a "Jewish State" and an "Arab State".

The Solidarity Day aims to help the international community focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine is still unresolved, and the Palestinian people have yet to attain their rights as defined by the General Assembly.
