BEIJING, March 5 -- East Asia can "breathe easily" as there will be no re-run of either world wars in 2014, according to a commentary in Wednesday's China Daily.

The piece by freelance writer and journalist Tim Collard said that the speculative connection between the current international situation and that in 1914, on the eve of World War I, has no stance.

Historical, geographical and cultural differences in Europe and East Asia between 1914 and 2014 are apparent. Circumstances which led Europe into war in 1914 simply do not exist in East Asia in 2014, the commentary said.

"Despite eternal quarrels and mistrust between China and Japan, one cannot conceive of China's military buildup as a detailed plan for invasion and conquest," it said.

The article also queried Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's remarks on attributing to China the position occupied by imperial Germany a century ago, and Collard indicated it is Japan that "has already made some unusual moves in regional diplomacy."

China has shown no sign of resolving the Korean Peninsula issue by force and has no proactive military intentions, it said.

China's deployment of the aircraft carrier the Liaoning is not aimed at any other specific major power but intends to bring its military capability to a higher level, it said.
