BEIJING, March 18 -- China said on Tuesday it opposes politicizing the human rights issue or using it as pretext to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the comment at a daily news briefing when responding to a question about the United Nations Human Rights Council discussing human rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

"China has clear and consistent standpoint on human rights," Hong said, noting that China has always advocated resolving human rights differences through constructive dialogue and cooperation based on equality and mutual respect.

"China opposes politicizing the human rights issue or using it as pretext to interfere in other countries' internal affairs," Hong said.

Hong said China expects international community to make constructive efforts to help maintain the easing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
