U.S. Republican candidate Senator John McCain cast his vote here on Tuesday after making frenetic final dashes across several crucial states one day earlier.

As McCain walked into the voting booth at a church in his Phoenix precinct, voters erupted in cheers and a crush of media from around the world tried to follow him in but were stopped. One person carried a sign that read, "Use your brain, vote McCain!"

Accompanied by his wife Cindy, McCain cast their ballots and left within minutes, avoiding any lines. He signed a poster and gave the thumbs-up sign before leaving without speaking to reporters.

Hours before casting his vote, McCain attended a midnight rally at his hometown of Prescott outside Phoenix as part of his last-ditch effort to drum up support.

"My friends, it's been a long, long journey," McCain told supporters at the rally in Prescott, where he kicked off his Senate campaigns. It was the final stop in a sprint across three time zones that took him to seven states that included Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New Mexico and Nevada on Monday.

Although lagging behind his Democratic rival Senator Barak Obama by a big margin in a blizzard of late polls, McCain said he was confident of winning the election.

The polls showed Obama leading in most competitive states, leaving McCain with only the narrowest possible path to victory Tuesday night.

After casting his ballot, McCain was heading to campaign stops in two Western battlegrounds -- a rally in Grand Junction, Colorado, and a volunteer site in New Mexico before returning to Phoenix to watch election night returns, campaign officials said.

McCain normally stays close to home on Election Day, often taking in a movie, sources close to McCain said.
