39 detained by Beijing subway security check
11:02, July 16, 2008

According to the Beijing Public Security Bureau, since it began carrying out security inspections in the Beijing subway system two weeks ago, it has performed 1.9 million inspections, found 3400 illegal articles, redirected passengers to exit the station and switch to other modes of transportation 2000 times, and detained 39 people for carrying illegal knives and restricted articles.

According to Beijing Public Security Bureau Vice-Chief Liu Yong, the Public Transportation Security Department has taken measures to ensure that the security check process is quick, and to avoid overcrowding in the subway as well as slowing down entry and exit. First, it has implemented a plan of operations. Second, it has carried out two major components of standard security checks to ensure that inspection work is systematic and orderly.
