The Chinese have surpassed the Japanese to become the number one foreign shoppers in South Korea.

In the first quarter of 2009, Chinese shoppers accounted for only 15 percent of the sales volume for foreigners at the Lotte Shopping complex. But this number climbed to nearly 47 percent in the last quarter. At the Hyundai Department Store, Chinese customers contributed to 50 percent of foreign sales this January, compared with 33 percent during the same time last year.

Chinese visitors spend an average of 2 million South Korean Won, or 12 thousand yuan in one trip. This number is double that of Japanese shoppers. South Korean retailers say they are trying new ways to enlarge the potential market for Chinese shoppers.
