Pando was working as a vegetable planter at the Qiyi state farm west of Lhasa when the Chinese Mountain Climbing Team went there to look for a woman mountaineer in 1959. She promptly signed up, and after one month of adaptive training, she passed the selection to become a member of the team. Six months later Pando and her teammates stood on the 7,546 meter-high Muztagh Ata in the Pamirs, breaking the record set by the French woman climber Claude Kogan.
