BRUSSELS, July 3 -- The Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei confirmed here on Thursday that it has been elected to join the board of the 5G infrastructure Association in Europe.

Dr. David Soldani of Huawei European Research Center will be the company's representative on the board, the company said in a statement.

The 5G Infrastructure Association is an international non-profit association based in the Belgian city of Gent, which carries out research on 5G communication systems and networks, the preparation of global standards related to 5G as well as regulatory discussions on topics including future frequency bands.

It represents the private sector within the 5G Public-Private Partnership (5G-PPP), a 1.4 billion euro (1.9 billion US dollars) joint initiative between the European ICT industry and the European Commission.

The 5G-PPP aims at materializing the next generation of communication networks that will deliver ubiquitous super-fast connectivity for Europe and globally.

Huawei said it will play an important advisory role for the 5G Infrastructure Association, contributing to shape the European Union priorities in 5G research and extending the dialogue to a wider group of stakeholders.
