Israel opened one more sector of the "Al Shuhada" street in Hebron October 31 morning to traffic for Palestinian vehicles in line with the Sharm Al Sheikh memorandum signed between Israel and the Palestinians in September.

One sector of the street was opened to Palestinians several months ago, and the Sharm Al Sheikh memorandum stipulated that the street would be wholly opened to traffic in a second stage not exceeding October 30.

Palestinian civilian liaison officer in Hebron Colonel Salamat Jawadi welcomed the Israeli decision, expressing fears that there might not be the full opening of the street, in contradiction with the Sharm Al Sheikh memorandum.

Meanwhile, Radio Israel broadcast that about 100 Israeli residents in Hebron have staged demonstrations in the street protesting against its opening on the grounds that it will constitute a threat to their security.

The Shuhada street was closed in the wake of the massacre perpetrated by a diehard Jew in March 1994 which resulted in the killing and injury of 180 people while saying their prayers inside Ibrahimi mosque. (Xinhua)
