Culture China Builds Its First Polar World

A zoo for polar animals is to be built in Dalian, a port city in northeast province of Liaoning.

Polar World will be made up of three parts. The first will have white whales, cowfish, walruses, penguins, seals, otters, sea lions and a polar bear. The second will have animal performances, and the third will be a shark aquarium with over 300 sharks. Visitors will also be able to see divers' performances in the shark aquarium pond.

The project, with a total investment of 300 million yuan (about 36 million US dollars) from Sea-Rich Oil (Singapore) Pte.Ltd., is to start on March 1, 2000. It is expected to be opened to the public by July, 2001.

An aquarium in Dalian was also funded by a Singapore Company, and inspired the Sea-Rich Oil company manager to build Polar World.
