Sports China Win HK Int'l Women Soccer Tourney

Powerhouses China encountered stiff challenges from African champions Nigeria in Hong Kong Sunday before edging out Nigerians 3-1 and winning the Hong Kong International Women's Soccer Invitation Tournament.

"The goal difference should be higher, because we lost too many chances in the second half," said Chinese head coach Ma Yuanan.

"We are very happy to play world runners-up China," Nigerian chief coach Mabo Ismaila said, adding that the result could be re-written if the match were held in another country.

"We'll work hard back to our country, and let's see what happens in Sydney Olympics," said Ismaila.

Nigeria, who ranked fifth in last year's women's World Cup in the United States, got off to a good start with their manlike style and tough play, which made the Chinese back to the defense in the first 15 minutes.

World and Olympic silver medallists China opened the scoring when Zhang Ouying slammed home in the box after catching a long pass from teammate Jin Yan in the 32nd minute.

But the Nigerians equalized just one minute later as Ifeanyi Chiejina angled the ball home after a sudden-attack.

The second half saw the Chinese girls gaining an upper hand with repeated attempts, most of which, however, were squandered by the Chinese players themselves.

Chinese captain Sun Wen made China leading at 2-1 in the 79th minute when she caught a throw in the box and right-footed the ball home.

China secured the victory when Zhang Ouying convinced a penalty and finished the match at 3-1.

In the match deciding the third place on Sunday, Hong Kong Invitation Team beat South Korea 2-0.

The four-team competition is organized by the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA). (Xinhua)
