China Top Official Urges Trade Unions to Help Poor Workers

China's trade unions should help poor workers live a better life, Wei Jianxing, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committeeand president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU), said during a two-day tour to Tangshan, in north China's Hebei Province.

Wei Jianxing made the remark during a visit to model workers and poor families in Tangshan, a city which became known to the world in 1976 after a devastating earthquake claimed 240,000 lives.

A member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, Wei also observed the city's re-employment centers, training centers for laid-off workers and recreation centers for the retirees.

He stressed that trade unions at various levels should set up archives of all poor workers, so that trade unions could offer a helping hand to those who are most in need.

Vice-president of ACFTU Zhang Junjiu and Hebei provincial government officials accompanied Wei on his tour, which ended today.
