China Beijing Unveils Logo and Mascot for 2001 University Games

China unveiled the official logo and mascot for the 21st University Games which to be held here in the Chinese capital in August, 2001, organizers said on Friday.

The emblem, a Chinese calligraphy of the English letter U which stands for the figures of 21 and the word "university", represents the unity of all the students athletes from all over the world competing in the 21st Universiad.

The Mascot Lala, a smiling cartoon crocodile of the Chinese alligator, shows the confident and challenging sprits of today's college students.

The logo and mascot, both designed by college students from Shanghai, beat some of other 750 pieces of proposals in a nationwide designing collection by the organizers since last June.

The Universiad, the first main international event held in China next year, will draw more than 7,000 student athletes from about 160 countries and regions.
