Vice-Premier Urges Education for Teenagers

Vice-Premier Li Lanqing Tuesday called for enhancing and improving education for teenagers in line with the country's need for socialist constructors and successors for the 21st century.

Attending group discussions with Inner Mongolia and Zhejiang deputies to the 9th National People's Congress, in session since Sunday, Li said that Jiang Zemin's recent talks on education are not directed at individual, occasional incidents, but aim to revitalize the Chinese nation through science and education.

Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, said: " reducing the burden" of students means relieving their excessive homework. The work of reducing students' burden itself is a systems program involving educational concept, teaching materials, teaching programs, teaching contents, curricular arrangements, teaching methodology, teaching quality and efficiency, and reform of the system of examinations and appraisals, he said.

Li called attention to some places where teaching and organization of extracurricular activities for students have slackened, as a result of one-sided understanding of "reducing students' burden."

He called for creating a macro environment that is favorable to all-round quality education for teenagers.
