NPC and Its Standing Committee Enhances External Tie with Foreign Counterparts

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), today said the NPC and its standing committee has enhanced friendly exchanges with parliaments from other countries and international parliament organizations in line with China's independent foreign policy of peace.

In his report to the on-going 3rd Session of the 9th NPC, Li said the NPC and its Standing Committee have made new progress in its exchanges with the Congress of the United States and European Parliament.

Last year, the NPC delegation had candid dialogues with both Republican and Democrat congressmen and senators of the U.S. and opened up a channel for regular exchanges with them, Li said, adding that the NPC and its Standing committee had also fixed annual talks with European Parliament.

Li Peng went on to say that in the past year, the NPC has played host to visiting groups from the parliaments of 50 countries. And many of the parliaments have increased their understanding of China through their visits.

Meanwhile, chairman and vice-chairmen of the NPC Standing Committee made trips to some countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe while NPC delegations attended two assemblies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and a number of regional conferences.

The exchange of visits made by the NPC and its international counterparts have helped to increase their friendly relations and cooperation, Li added.

Moreover, the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee last year issued several statements to denounce the hegemonic acts of bombing China's embassy in Yugoslavia by the NATO headed by the U.S. and a number of bills and resolutions passed by the U.S. and a few West European nations pertaining to the interference in China's internal affairs, Li Peng said, and these statements clarified China's principled stance and attitude, and resolutely defend the country's dignity and interests.
