Beijing Starts Second-Phase Renovation of Wangfujing

Beijing Wednesday started the second-phase renovation of Wangfujing, the city's busiest commercial street. The whole project is expected to be completed in September. Wangfujing Street, which is located in the central downtown area of Beijing, is only two km from the Beijing Railway Station. The first phase of its reconstruction was completed in September 1999, helping attract an average number of 300,000 customers a day.

The second phase of the construction will help the street expand in the north, east and west directions. The Jinyu (Goldfish) Hutong on the east side of the street will be turned into an avenue of hotels and restaurants, while a back street on the west side will be built into a street of snack bars. The project also includes the extension of the street to the north, which will make Wangfujing Street two or three kilometers longer than before.

The current commercial structure of the street will also be renovated, with more toilets and other public facilities constructed.

The project will cost a total of 340 million yuan (about 40 million U.S. dollars), and 242 million yuan will be spent to relocate residents living in the affected areas.
