Southwest China Opens Wholesale Farm Produce Market

The largest wholesale market for agricultural products in southwest China opened today in this capital city of Sichuan Province.

The 200,000-square-meter market, built at a cost of 120 million yuan, has more than 700 trade booths, and includes two exchange halls and an outdoor market.

The first group of 400 business people are now doing business at the market, wholesaling vegetables, flowers, and agricultural side-line products.

The market will provide information on the Internet and will introduce electronic-business services to the traditional field of agriculture, said a local economic official.

In three to five years, the market will cover a full range of business scope from production, processing, packing, storage and transportation, distribution, and testing, the official said.

Over the past ten years, Chengdu has set up 199 production bases for agricultural and side-line products, he said, adding that a large wholesale network of agricultural products for southwest China is now shaping up in the city.
