Xinhua Commentary on Lee Teng-hui's Resignation

Resignation of Lee Teng-hui as chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) on March 24 under mounting pressure shows that whoever advocates "Taiwan independence" will come to no-good, the Xinhua News Agency said in a commentary on the same day.

Lee's stepdown put an end to his career of conspiracy for "two Chinas" and "one China, one Taiwan" well ahead of his term as KMT chairman by taking advantage of his position to plot "independence" surreptitiously and destroy relations across the Taiwan Strait, the commentary says.

During his 12 years in power, Lee tampered with the KMT's policy of "one China" and advocated "Taiwan's independence", thus pushing the KMT step by step toward the dangerous road of splitting the motherland, it says.

He also connived at and supported the forces for "Taiwan's independence", allowing the return of Taiwanese splittists living abroad to Taiwan, who have finally become rampant destructive forces in the Taiwan society, the commentary says.

The commentary accuses Lee of changing Taiwan's political system step by step in line with the blueprint for an independent state drawn up by Taiwan splittists, which set up the mechanism and paved the way for the Taiwan splittists to take over the ruling power of Taiwan.

His rumor-mongering and deluding of the general public in Taiwan in an attempt to sever the cultural and legal links of Taiwan with the mainland has sown confusion in the Taiwan society,it says.

The commentary also condemns Lee's attempt to rely on international anti-China forces to promote his conspiracy of splitting the motherland, his efforts to wreck the consultations and dialogues between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, his opposition to cross-straits exchanges and direct exchange of mail service, trade, air and shipping services, and his notorious "two states" theory that has heightened the tension across the straits.

All this made him nothing more than a "trouble-maker" in the international community, the biggest source of support for "Taiwan independence", the criminal who wrecked cross-straits ties and the scum of the Chinese nation.

The commentary says that the past 12 years has been a history of Lee's autarchy in the name of democracy, as he suppressed the advocates of reunification and purged the people supporting reunification within the KMT through taking advantage of the conflicts he provoked between the ethnic groups in Taiwan.

That led to the growing weakness of the voice of reunification within the party while the voice of "Taiwan independence" in Taiwan grew louder and louder.

Lee's disgraceful resignation amid strong pressure from his own party should serve as a lesson for others soon to be in power in Taiwan, it warns.

The "One China" principle is the touchstone identifying those for "Taiwan independence" and those for peace across the straits and eventual reunification of the motherland, it adds.

"Those who are still trying to conceal their stance of 'Taiwan independence' with sweet words to deceive the general public in Taiwan, and who are determined not to accept the 'One China' principle in an attempt to split Taiwan from China, should draw a lesson from the disgraceful downfall of Lee Teng-hui", it adds.

"We will wait and see in which direction they will go", the commentary concludes.
