China Steps up Efforts to Protect Consumer Interests

China's industrial and commercial administration departments dealt with 168,500 cases related to the manufacturing of fake brand name and shoddy products last year in a move to protect the interests of Chinese consumers.

According to officials with the State Industrial and Commercial Administration, the confiscated fake commodities were valued at some three billion yuan (390 million US dollars). They said that most of the fake products were foodstuff, soft drinks, cigarettes, and alcoholic beverages.

At the same time, the State Industrial and Commercial Administration handled 67,000 cases of infringements on the rights of consumers, and collected 76 million yuan in fines from illegal manufacturers.
