First School for Children of Taiwan Businessmen Opened in Mainland

Dongguan School for Children of Taiwan Businessmen, the first school for Taiwan students set up with the approval from the state educational authorities, has started its enrollment in an all-round way. More than 200 Taiwan children from in and outside the province have registered. The new term is expected to begin on September 1 this year.

The school uses the teaching materials in connection with the Taiwan educational system and employs experienced educator as its headmaster. Most of the teachers come from Taiwan who, while carrying out teaching with emphasis on adaptability, personality and diversity among the students, will strengthen training in Chinese and Taiwan local dialect and information message, give full play to students' potential and foster their personal character and ability to solve problems.

The school covers an area of 130 mu (15 mu=1 hectare), and has seen completion of two-fifths of the project which involves a planned investment of 100 million yuan. In the first stage, the school will open six classes from class one to class six, each of which will consist of two grades with a total enollment of 420 pupils; three junior middle school classes, each of which contains two grades with a total enrollment of 210 students. The school sets up a kindergarten.

In the second stage, classes will be increased according to needs, the school is large enough to accommodate 2,000 students. All students are required to board at school, they will be taken home by their parents after classes on Friday afternoon and be sent back to school on Sunday afternoon.

According to Ye Hongdeng, chairman of the preparatory committee of the school, the enrollment started from late February, over 250 Taiwan children have signed up. Students come from Dongguan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai Huizhou and Zhongshan. Some of them are even from far-off places such as Shanghai and Kunming. The school will enroll the students in the sequential order from Dongguan to outside regions until the enrollment quota is fulfilled.
