| Thursday, March 30, 2000, updated at 10:12(GMT+8) Business HK Initiates Postal Remittance Service to MainlandHongkong Post announced on Wednesday that it will join hands with China Post to introduce the reciprocal Postal Remittance Service with the mainland as from March 30, offering customers a direct and convenient way of sending money. Hong Kong customers can remit money to the mainland at any of the post offices throughout the territory, according to a spokesman for Hongkong Post. Under the new service, the recipients in the mainland can receive the remittance in either Renminbi at over 50,000 post offices or U.S. dollars at the designated 232 post offices on the mainland. The maximum remittance amount per money order is 1,000 U.S. dollars, the spokesman said. With over 50,000 post offices providing postal remittance service on the mainland, the service can reach very remote places and allow recipients to cash their money orders conveniently at nearby designated local post offices, he added. The cooperative relations between Hong Kong Post and postal services on China's mainland were described as "brotherly" which began long before the 1997 handover. Express Mail Services (EMS) is the number one postal exchange between Hong Kong and the mainland in terms of volume, followed by ordinary mail. Mainland customs have greatly supported and assisted the relay of mail to and from Hong Kong, and the volume of EMS between the two has increased by 15 percent after 1997 with delivery time of EMS dropping to two days.
