Fire Claims 74 Lives in Central China

At least 74 people, including three children, were killed in a big fire that destroyed two cinemas in the city of Jiaozuo in central China's Henan province early morning of March 29.

Police rescued 12 people. The owner of the Tiantang cinema was badly burnt and is undergoing an emergency operation at a local hospital.

Police said lack of fire safety facilities is most likely the major cause for the huge number of deaths.

Fire broke out in Tiantang cinema in Jiaozuo at 3:30 am this morning and quickly spread to the Dongfang cinema next door. Firemen took a little over one hour to extinguish the fire at 4:35 am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
