The Hong Kong government will take the opportunity of the tenth anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law to enhance the public's understanding of the Basic Law.

Announcing a series of activities to mark the important and historic event, Principal Assistant Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Patrick Chan said the promotional and educational activities organized this year were under the theme of " Understanding One Country, Realizing Two Systems."

"This April marks the tenth anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law. Under the guidance and support of the Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee, various government bureaus and departments, and non-government organizations have joined hands to organize a series of promotional activities," Chan told a media briefing on Thursday.

"We expect these informative and interesting promotional and educational activities to cover every sector of our community and enable us to make significant headway in increasing the public's understanding of the Basic Law."

The major activities include a symposium on "One Country, Two System - its Historic and International Implications", a Basic Law seminar, a special souvenir cover and a wide range of roving exhibitions.

They also include a Constitutional Law conference on "Implementation of the Basic Law: A Comparative Perspective", a "Basic Law and You" lyric competition, a Basic Law essay writing competition for students, radio programs on the Basic Law, a special publication on teaching the Basic Law in schools and exhibitions of winning entries of School Project Competition.
