Kazakh President Meets With Visiting Chinese Defense Minister

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Thursday met with Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian, who is attending an annual meeting with his counterparts from Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Nazarbayev said the defense ministers' meeting has demonstrated to the world the five countries' solidarity in strengthening their cooperation in the military and security fields and will contribute to their joint fight against separatism, extremism and cross-border terrorism.

He reiterated Kazakhstan's support for China's principle on the Taiwan issue.

Chi, also vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, said the defense ministers' meeting marks a new level in the mutual trust and friendly cooperation between the five countries in the military field, and will push forward their cooperation in maintaining regional security and stability.

The defense ministers from the five countries have held annual meetings since a series of border troop reduction agreements were reached at a 1996 summit in Shanghai.
