Flower Clock From China Settles in Phnom Penh

A big flower clock from China was settled Wednesday in Wat Phnom at the center of Phnom Penh. A hand-over ceremony was held at Wat Phnom with the participation of Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality Chea Sophara and Counselor of Chinese Embassy to Cambodia Zhang Jinfeng and others.

The clock, worth of more than 90,000 U.S. dollars, was presented by China Yunnan Corporation for International Techno- Economic Cooperation to the Phnom Penh Municipality. Chea Sophara expressed his thanks to the Chinese company, saying the beautiful flower clock not only beautified the environment of Phnom Penh city, but also marks the friendship between the people of our two countries. "It will certainly strengthen the friendship and cooperation between our two peoples, " Chea Sophara said.

The flower clock, replacing the old one from France, has a diameter of about 20 meters and controlled by computer. In addition to an automatic GPS timing system, the clock has an automatic fault diagnosis system and a maximum power for working 36 hours even if the alternating current was interrupted. With the big ben sound, the clock can also automatically broadcast Cambodia's national anthem twice a day at the time when the sun is rising and sinking.

Wat Phnom temple is a symbol of Phnom Penh, which was built in 1434 to house sacred relics. Even today it remains the highest artificial hill in Phnom Penh and center of many forms of leisure activities.
