Swedish Notables Call for Lift of Sanctions on Yugoslavia

As many as 79 Swedish notables of various circles called on the international community to lift the sanctions on Yugoslavia in an article carried on the Dagens Nyheter (Daily News) Thursday.

The 10-year-old sanctions on the Balkan country have brought great difficulties and pain to its people, including serious lack of food, medicines and fuels, they said.

In addition, the sanctions have hindered the reconstruction of Yugoslavia after NATO's bombing in 1999 and the settlement of some 1 million Balkan refugees in the country, said the article, signed by leading figures from political, cultural, sports, religious and justice circles in the country.

"It is necessary to restore normal relations with Yugoslavia in all fields," whether out of humanitarian considerations or for the sake of a peaceful environment in Europe and respect for the U.N. charter, the article noted.

They urged the Swedish government to make efforts for the lifting of the sanctions on Yugoslavia.
