Yang Chen Ning: China Able to Push 10 Universities to World Class

Professor Yang Chen Ning, Nobel Prize physics laureate, theoretical physicist, stressed many times during his visit in Nanjing University from April 2 to 7 that China has the ability to push its 10 universities to the world class.

Professor Yang said at an inviting professors seminar held at Nanjing University April 3 that China is preordained by its fine tradition, good congenital condition, national fine gene and numerous promising talents being cultivated to take an important place in world technology development in the future. A exhilarating spectacle seen in China today is that great efforts are being made by the Chinese government to push Beijing University, Qinghua University, Nanjing University and 7 others to the world class and hefty changes that have been brought about in every 5 and every 10 years, he said.

Professor Yang Chen Ning during his visit had views exchanged with President Jiang Shusheng of Nanjing University on upgrading China's education and creation of world class universities of the country's. Yang pointed it out that as higher education and technology have been developed at a new stage a university must firmly grasp the development direction of technology and education, open up new scientific technological fields, train new talents and actively provide service to society in the 21st century.

Yang noted that creation of world class universities needs good faculty groundwork and necessary first-rate disciplines to be instituted according to different branches of sciences. A qualified world class university should have a dozen or so of world class faculties created and run in the way they are well compared to those topping the list of 20 world advanced, he said. Yang further suggested that Nanjing University should concentrate on studies in related realms of sciences and studies of international issue and biology subjects.

According to Nanjing University, the one-week lecture given by Professor Yang was the first lecture of "Huaying" lectures sponsored by Huaying Fund. The fund, aiming at helping the university train advanced economic and technological talents, enhance international academic exchange and raise academic level, was set up by Yu Jizhong, Nanjing University alumnus, president of Taiwan China Times Inc with a donation of US $71.8 billion made last year.
