Chang Enters Second Round in Atlanta Tennis

Fourth seed Michael Chang of the United States edged Italian Davide Sanguinetti 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the ATP tour tennis tournament in Atlanta on Monday night.

Chang, the Atlanta champion in 1994 and 1995, never lost his serve. He squandered two set points against Sanguinetti's serve in the first set but won every break point thereafter. Chang is seeking to regain the form that led him to close the 1992 through 1997 seasons with rankings that ranged from No. 2 to No. 8.

Last year ended with Chang ranked No. 50. Chang said he is working on his footwork and movement to regain the superior court coverage.

In the only other match featuring a seeded player on Monday, eighth seed Andrew Ilie of Australia defeated Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-2.
