UN Urged to Eradicate World's PovertyThe United Nations should focus on eradicating poverty worldwide before trying to create peace and stability, South African Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Wednesday at the G77 South Summit in Havana, Cuba.A statement from South African Foreign Affairs Department quoted Dlamini-Zuma as saying: "Without the eradication of poverty, there can be no peace and stability." Dlamini-Zuma was invited as the first speaker to outline South Africa's view on the role of the UN in the 21st century. "She said that the vision of the UN expressed in its Charter and founding documents is outlined clearly, and there is a need to examine its track record to assess where it has succeeded and where there have been obstacles," the statement said. The minister also pointed out that although the UN had done well with performing peace keeping operations, it was usually done after conflict had developed. "It is important to prevent conflicts, hence the need for the UN to develop an early warning system, with the view of being able to take preemptive measures before conflicts actually start," Dlamini-Zuma said. She stressed the UN and its institutions should play a greater role in creating democracy and good governance and addressing the needs and peculiarities of different countries as there is no "one size fits all" model democracy. |
