The 21st Century China Internet Conference Held in Beijing

The 21st Century China Internet Conference, the first gathering of Internet elites in China, was held in Beijing on April 20. More than 800 representatives of Internet companies both at home and abroad were at the gathering to explore into the prospect and development of Internet industry in China in the new millennium.

The year 1999 is a year of great advance by China in developing its Internet industry. By the end of last year, China has by its 15,000 websites from 1,500 and a greatly increased number of Internet users, taken a place among 8 world top Internet powers including the US, the UK, Germany and Japan. Sources predict that China will make itself one of the largest Internet markets in the 21st century in the world. The conference held at this moment will exert a far-reaching influence on China's Internet development in the future.

The conference was jointly sponsored by a group of Internet companies and websites including China Internet Information Center, People's Daily Online, Xinhua News Agency, Guangming Daily and Sina.
