Second Preparatory Meeting for Inter-Korean Summit to Open Thursday

South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) have agreed to hold a second preparatory meeting for the agreed inter-Korean summit on June 12-14.

The agreement was reached at the first preparatory meeting held in the Peace House south of the truce village Saturday morning.

Delegations from Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to hold the second meeting at Tongilgak, a house north of the truce village, at 10 a. m. local time (0100 GMT) next Thursday.

At a press conference after the meeting, Vice Unification Minister Yang Young-shik, South Korea's chief delegate, said the meeting was held in a very friendly atmosphere and the DPRK delegation showed a very positive and pragmatic attitude.

At the meeting, the two sides expressed their respective basic stances on the agenda and procedures for the summit and agreed to seek mutual development and prosperity through economic cooperation.

The DPRK delegation reaffirmed the basic spirit of the agreement signed by the two sides on April 8 this year for the summit, saying that the forthcoming Pyongyang summit will address a wide range of pending issues and create the momentum for national unification.

The DPRK side also stressed that both sides should solve fundamental problems as they have many pending issues to contend with.

The South Korean top delegate said that in accordance with an earlier agreement, he refused to disclose the content of the meeting, which began at 10 a.m. (0100 GMT) and ended at 11:20 a.m. (0220 GMT) Saturday.

It is the first inter-Korean government-level meeting in the border village since July 1994 when preparatory talks for a summit between then South Korean President Kim Young-sam and late DPRK leader Kim Il-sung broke off due to the latter's sudden death.
