New Cable Network in Asia Pacific to Be BuiltChina Telecom and other 25 telecommunication companies in the Asia Pacific Region has signed an agreement to build the first self-healing high bandwidth optical fiber submarine cable system in the region.The cable, known as the Asian Pacific Cable Network 2, will cost about US$1 billion and is expected to carry commercial traffic by the end of September 2001, sources from China Telecom said in Beijing Tuesday. Upon its completion, the 19,000 km-long cable system will connect eight countries and regions in the Asia Pacific Region. Besides serving the region, the cable system will also provide seamless interconnection with other major trans-oceanic cable networks providing connection to the USA, European countries, Australia and other parts of Asia. The cable system is designed to use state-of-the-art Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology to provide upgradable, future-proof transmission facilities that support the Internet and e-commerce. In addition, the cable system will have a "self-healing ring configuration" with four fiber-optic pairs, with greater network resilience and route diversity.
