Scholar Urges Taiwan to Accept "One China" Principle

China's civil war will be reopened only if the new Taiwan authorities do not recognize the " One China" principle and the fact that they are Chinese, a Chinese research fellow pointed out Wednesday.

All responsible and sensible Chinese across the Taiwan Straits should unite as one to fight against "Taiwan independence" forces, and promote peace and reunification at this critical moment, said Xin Qi, a research fellow of the Peace and Development Research Center, at a symposium.

The relationship across the Taiwan Straits is still in a hostile state, and the possibility of new civil war and reunification by force still exists even though Taiwan leaders have been changed, he said.

The "One China" principle is the basis for political talks across the Straits and key to peaceful reunification, Xin noted, adding that the principle is adhered to by the international community, and accepted by 1.3 billion Chinese people, including Taiwanese, as well as tens of millions of overseas Chinese.
