Xinjiang to Speed up Construction of Basic Facilities

Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region will exert greater efforts to speed up the construction of basic facilities.

The region will take opportunities of the national campaign to develop China's western regions.

In the coming few years, the region will invest more than 20 billion yuan (2.4 billion U.S. dollars) to build a number of water-control facilities and improve irrigation technology.

The region will also invest 2.43 billion yuan to accelerate its rural electric network this year.

Xinjiang will also invest 23 billion yuan to build highways in the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2001-2005) and the region will add 338 kilometers of highways this year.

local government will adopt a series of preferential policies to speed up the construction of rural towns and housing.
