Philippine President's Upcoming China Visit Helpful

China believes that Philippine President Joseph Ejercito Estrada's upcoming visit to China will help promote further development of bilateral relations.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue told a press conference that China places great importance on President Estrada 's upcoming visit to China, and Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Domingo Siazon is now in Beijing to make preparations for the visit.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Estrada will pay a state visit to China from May 16 to 20 at the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zemin, the first visit to China since he assumed the presidency.

"The leaders of the two countries will exchange views on bilateral relations and regional and international issues of common interest," Zhang said.

President Estrada Monday expressed his confidence on relations with China in Manila, saying that the Philippines and China will be able to foster a stronger diplomatic relationship in the 21st century.
