China, UNIDO Vow to Strengthen Cooperation

A senior Chinese trade official said Monday that China hopes to expand its cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Shi Guangsheng, minister of foreign trade and economic cooperation, told visiting UNIDO Director-General Carlos Magarinos that China hopes UNIDO will play a bigger role in promoting investment and technology transfer, with the aim of narrowing the gap between developed and developing countries.

The Chinese minister said that China will, as it has always done, continue to support UNIDO. He described the current cooperation between China and UNIDO as "very good" and conducive to China's economic development.

Magarinos congratulated China on its "surprising economic growth" over the past years, and said with the joint efforts of both UNIDO and China, there will be more successful cooperation in the future.

Magarinos is here to attend a hi-tech fair in Beijing.
