Ba Jin Elected to Contend for 2001 Nobel Literature Prize

Nobel Literature Prize Chinese Writers Nomination Committee in the US has made a final decision to elect the Chinese famous writer Ba Jin to compete for the 2001 Nobel Literature Prize.

In a letter to Ba Jin by the Chinese Writers Nomination Committee lauded Ba Jin as the most outstanding writer and thinker in today's China, his literature works of nearly half a century has set him up as a writer enjoying high prestige and respect in world culture circles.

The letter said that Nobel Literature Prize has had a history of nearly half a century, many writers in the world have won this laurel. Though many Chinese writers have created a lot of incomparable great works, yet due to some reasons, Chinese writers have no chance to edge the prize. We have to say it is a great pity.

Ba Jin has made great efforts in fighting for man's freedom, democracy, man's psychic liberation; his in-depth exploration about human nature and man's esteem has been recorded in history of Chinese culture, the letter said.

The Nomination Committee believes that the Nobel literature prize is not the sole and the highest standard of man's literary achievements, they won't give up their effort, the letter stated.

The Nobel Literature Prize Chinese Writers Nomination Committee was set up on January 28, 2000. A non-profit non-government organization, it has its the headquarters at Connecticut. Bing Ling, a Chinese writer, Wang Hailong, scholar of East Asian department of Colombia University serve as co-chairman of the Committee.

There are two ways to nominate candidates for Nobel literature prize. One, Nobel Fundation send invitations to tens of thousands of experts and professors to nominate the next year's Nobel prize candidates, the other way is candidates nominated by professors from universities, research institutes, experts and writers and literature associations. Then, a final panel vote is taken to decide on the laurel winners in every October.
