Jiangsu Boosts Telecommunications Development

East China's Jiangsu Province has invested 13 billion yuan (about US$ 1.56 billion) in recent years to boost its telecommunications development. A local official said the funds were used to raise the number of telephone subscribers.

So far, there are ten million telephone subscribers in the province, according to the official.

Jiangsu has set up a telecommunication network based on 55,000- km optical fiber cable lines, which link the provincial capital of Nanjing with cities, counties, towns and villages across the province, he said.

Official statistics show that Jiangsu's telephone subscribers have risen by one million each year over the past five years. The increase places Jiangsu as a leading figure in handling capacity of public switchboards in China.

At present, among every 100 residents in the province, 14 are telephone subscribers.
