Hong Kong Airport Sets New Highs in April

The number of passengers and air cargo tonnage handled by the Hong Kong International Airport reached new highs in April, according to the Hong Kong Airport Authority on May 14.

Almost three million passengers passed through the airport in April, an increase of 14.6 percent on a yearly basis. The airport handled nearly 31.3 million passengers in the 12 months from May 1999 to April 2000.

The high passenger figures for April can be attributed in part to the Easter holidays. One-day records for the airport were set on Good Friday when 121,000 passengers arrived or left on a total of 610 flights, the highest number of flights and passengers so far on a single day at the airport.

Cargo growth maintained a double-digit rate in April, with 185, 000 tons handled at the airport. The total for the last 12 months reached 2.09 million tons, a rise of 25.9 percent over the corresponding period in 1998-1999.

Cargo exports for April rose 20 percent from a year earlier, and 35.2 percent for the past 12 months.
