19 Killed, 25 Injured in Bus Accident in SW China

Nineteen people were killed and 25 others seriously injured in a bus accident Sunday afternoon near the city of Luzhou in Southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The bus, heading toward Luzhou from a tourist site in southern Sichuan, had 44 passengers on board, far exceeding the limit of 19. It skidded off a bridge and fell into a dry riverbed six meters below, killing 16 passengers instantly, local police said.

Three others died later at the hospital.

Local officials, public security officers and armed policemen rushed to the scene for rescue operations. All of the injured passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
