Central China Province Bans Logging in Primeval Forest
Central China's Hubei Province has issued a ban on logging in its primeval forest area called Shennongjia, one third of which has already been demarcated as a state-level nature reserve.
Shengnongjia has a forest coverage rate of more than 70 percent and is known as a gene bank of various species with its almost intact ecological conditions and rich resources including more than 2,400 plants, 570 animals, 2,000 herbs and 800 flowers. Prior to the issuance of the logging ban, the provincial government launched a project in April aimed at dealing a hard blow on destructive activities such as rampant exploitation of forest resources and paving the way for the implementation of the logging ban, according to the Provincial Deputy Governor Jia Tianzeng.
The province also allocated about ten million yuan (about 1.2 million U.S. dollars) to help the loggers and employees in timber processing industry transfer to other industries.
