Cultural Relics Unearthed in Iraq
A number of cultural relics have been unearthed in the Al-Hurreia region near the Samara city, about 120 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a report said on Tuesday.
The excavation included pottery, gold coins, ancient maps and saddles, the report quoted a source at the Directorate General Antiquities subordinate to the Iraqi Ministry of Culture and Information as saying.
The relics also included ruins of the Abbaside era more than 800 years ago, the report said.
Iraq, a country with long-standing ancient civilization, often reports archaeological discoveries.
On April 24, an Iraqi archaeological team found a number of ancient graves at Al-Musaihley village in the northern Neiveva province.
However, the decade-long United Nations sanctions, in place since 1990 following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, have taken a toll on Iraq's archaeology. Severe shortages of fund and rampant smuggling of relics have plagued the country for years since.
