HK Press Exposes Taiwan Leader's Evasion of One-China Principle

Hong Kong press pointed out Sunday that Taiwan new leader Chen Shui-bian deliberately shunned the one-China principle in his address delivered Saturday.

Chen adopted an evasive and ambiguous attitude on the key issue of accepting the one-China principle, therefore the "goodwill reconciliation" he mentioned lacks sincerity, said Ta Kung Pao, a Chinese language newspaper.

Another Chinese language newspaper, Wen Wei Po, noticed that Chen mentioned the term "one China" only once in the address and mentioned it in the context of "future one China."

This showed that the Taiwan authorities have not accepted the one-China principle and sent a very dangerous signal for the future development of the cross-Straits relations.

"The contacts and exchanges across the Taiwan Strait are based on the one-China principle. Nothing can be discussed without this principle," said Wen Wei Po.

Ming Pao, also a Chinese language paper, noted in an editorial that Chen did not state the fact that the people across the Taiwan Strait belong to the same country and nation.

"The reckless cut of the historical and cultural links between Taiwan and the mainland revealed in his address is absolutely unacceptable to any Chinese," said the daily.

Sing Tao daily pointed out in its editorial that Chen did not support reunification of China though he said he would not declare independence.

"Chen did not admit that he himself is a Chinese, nor did he admit the one-China principle, showing that he has no intention to promote the reunification of China," said the Chinese language newspaper.
