Guangxi Establishes Special Scholarship Program

Some 2,700 poor college students in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region today were awarded with "Spring Rain" scholarships for their studiousness and high moral standards

This special scholarship program for poor college students was initiated by the autonomous regional government last year with a fund of two million yuan annually.

The winners, who received from 600 to 1,000 yuan in scholarships for this year, account for 15 percent of all the poor college students in Guangxi, according to a local education official.

These students come from families with monthly incomes of less than 120 yuan. Statistics show that there are a total of 81,000 students studying in colleges and universities in Guangxi, and the poorer students account for 22.4 percent of the region's total college student population.

To enable these students in Guangxi to continue their studies, the regional government has also earmarked more than 10 million yuan to provide them with part-time jobs.
